Sri Vijaya Puram (Gurpreet Singh): The Andaman and Nicobar administration achieved a historic milestone on Saturday by setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest underwater national flag. The massive Tricolour, which measures approximately 60 by 40 metres, was unfurled at the renowned Radhanagar beach on Swaraj Dweep, also known as Havelock Island. The event took place in the presence of high-ranking officials including Lieutenant Governor D K Joshi, Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar, and Director General of Police H S Dhaliwal, marking a significant moment for the islands’ maritime and national history.
The complex operation required meticulous coordination between various agencies including the Andaman and Nicobar Police, the Forest Department, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Coast Guard. Over 200 trained divers from multiple diving centres collaborated to manage the intricate deployment of the flag beneath the sea. Notably, three school children, including sixteen-year-old Fateh Jahaan Singh, fifteen-year-old Lavanya Eira, and fourteen-year-old Ranvijay Singh, were the youngest participants in the historic dive. Fateh, a student from Gurugram, expressed immense pride in the achievement and described the experience as a profound way to witness the beauty of the marine world while celebrating his national identity.
At precisely 10:35 am, Guinness World Records adjudicator Rishi Nath officially verified the achievement and presented the certificate to Lieutenant Governor Joshi. Addressing the attendees, the Lieutenant Governor commended the teams for their unwavering commitment and seamless coordination, stating that the record adds to the unique accomplishments of the archipelago. He highlighted that such events bolster the islands’ reputation as a premier destination for adventure tourism and globally recognised marine activities. The young divers shared their excitement, noting that holding the national flag underwater provided an emotional and unforgettable adrenaline rush that resonated with everyone involved.
Building on the momentum of Saturday’s success, the administration has announced plans for another record-breaking attempt on Sunday. This upcoming event will target the world record for the tallest human stack and is scheduled to take place at the Lighthouse dive site on Swaraj Dweep. With senior officials expected to be in attendance once again, the islands continue to position themselves at the forefront of global adventure tourism and unique record-setting initiatives, further enhancing their international profile.
