Tehran Declines Face-to-Face Engagement with Washington During Islamabad Visit

Tehran (Rajeev Sharma): In a significant diplomatic development amid rising regional tensions, Iran has stated that it will not hold direct discussions with the United States during Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s ongoing visit to Islamabad.

Iranian authorities clarified that while diplomatic engagement continues, any communication with Washington will be carried out indirectly. Foreign ministry spokesperson Esmael Baqaei confirmed that no formal meeting has been scheduled between Iranian and US officials during this trip.

Instead, Pakistan is expected to play a facilitating role by relaying messages between the two sides. The arrangement reflects Tehran’s continued reluctance to engage in direct talks under current geopolitical conditions.

On his arrival, Araghchi was received by Ishaq Dar, who highlighted the importance of dialogue aimed at easing tensions and ensuring regional stability. Pakistan has positioned itself as a mediator, seeking to bridge communication gaps amid the ongoing crisis.

The development comes despite earlier expectations from the United States that a meeting could take place. However, Iran’s stance indicates that while diplomacy remains active, it will proceed through indirect channels for now.

Observers believe this approach underscores the fragile nature of current negotiations, where backchannel efforts continue even as formal dialogue remains limited.
