New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to a hospital on Friday after his health reportedly deteriorated during a 20-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, with Delhi Police saying the decision followed medical advice and directions issued by the Delhi High Court.
Police officials stated that Wangchuk’s condition required immediate medical attention after doctors monitoring his fast recommended hospitalisation. He was subsequently moved under official supervision for further treatment.
In a statement posted on social media, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) said the transfer was carried out in accordance with the High Court’s orders and on the recommendation of medical experts. The police also appealed to those gathered at Jantar Mantar to leave the protest venue peacefully after Wangchuk’s evacuation.
The activist had been observing an indefinite fast as part of a campaign seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Throughout the protest, Wangchuk maintained that his movement was committed to peaceful and democratic methods, urging supporters to continue raising their voices through non-violent means.
His removal from the protest site comes at a crucial stage, with supporters preparing for further demonstrations in the national capital. The development has also intensified discussions over the demands raised during his agitation and the government’s response.
Authorities emphasised that the intervention was purely based on health considerations and not intended to disrupt the protest. Medical teams are expected to continue monitoring Wangchuk’s condition while officials remain on alert around the Jantar Mantar area.
