Anurag Kumar Appointed New Delhi Police Commissioner

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): The Union Home Ministry announced on Friday the appointment of senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar as the new Commissioner of Police for Delhi, according to an official government order. A 1994-batch officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, Kumar succeeds 1992-batch IPS officer Satish Golchha. Prior to this high-profile assignment, Kumar served as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and was repatriated to his parent cadre by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, which is chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The official directive confirmed that Kumar’s appointment takes effect from the date he assumes charge and will continue until further orders. Meanwhile, Golchha, who took charge on August 22, 2025, following a security incident involving Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has been instructed to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for his next assignment once the leadership transition is complete. Kumar, an engineering graduate, supersedes three senior officers—Special Commissioners Garima Bhatnagar, Rajesh Khurana, and Robin Hibu—who will now be reassigned to new responsibilities under standard administrative norms.

Kumar brings extensive internal security experience to the role, having spent two decades within the Intelligence Bureau managing critical portfolios such as counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, VIP security, and anti-Naxal strategy. His career also includes diplomatic experience at the Indian mission in Washington. In recognition of his long-standing service, he received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016. Furthermore, the Ministry of Home Affairs granted him a proforma promotion to the Director General of Police rank in February 2025.

Security officials indicate that Kumar’s immediate priorities will centre on reinforcing the capital’s overall safety framework and preserving public order. His primary administrative agenda is expected to focus heavily on dismantling organised crime networks, counter-terrorism readiness, and mitigating the escalating threats associated with regional cybercrime. Analysts suggest that placing a veteran intelligence strategist at the helm of the Delhi Police underscores the federal government’s heightened focus on stabilizing internal security within the national capital.
