Kolkata (Gurpreet Singh): — Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra was targeted with eggs and met with black flags and “go back” slogans during a political visit to Tehatta in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Wednesday. The incident occurred as the two-term parliamentarian representing Krishnanagar was exiting a party meeting. Moitra alleged that between seven to ten Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, including local mandal leaders and panchayat representatives, staged the demonstration and hurled eggs directly at her in the presence of state police personnel.
Taking to social media platform X with visible traces of broken eggshells on her face, Moitra accused the police of failing to enforce legal protections and claimed that instead of intercepting the demonstrators, officers forcibly escorted her into her vehicle. In her posts, the MP took a sharp, sarcastic swipe at Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta. She noted that she faced the onslaught just as “a freedom fighter faced bullets,” directly referencing oral remarks made by a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Sheel Nagu during an August hearing. At that time, the apex court had declined to entertain her plea seeking virtual appearance before police in a hate-speech inquiry, remarking that an elected representative should not shy away from political engagement over fears of egg-throwing when freedom fighters had faced gunfire.
The episode in Tehatta follows similar recent confrontations, including a black-flag protest faced by Moitra in Nadia’s Chapra area. Responding to the allegations, West Bengal BJP chief spokesperson Debjot Sarkar stated that any assault on a woman is reprehensible if verified, but firmly denied the involvement of BJP workers, questioning whether the demonstration was politically staged by opponents. The confrontation unfolds amid heightened political volatility across the region, where recurring demonstrations have intensified friction between local party cadres.
