Punjab and Haryana High Court Quashes FIR Against Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh)— In a significant legal victory for senior Congress leader and Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has quashed an FIR registered against him, officially halting all related criminal proceedings. The decisive ruling came in response to petition CRM-M-53987-2025, bearing the neutral citation 2026:PHHC:131619, in which the lawmaker had sought the annulment of the case.

Khaira had approached the High Court arguing that the criminal case lodged against him was politically motivated and completely devoid of any sustainable legal grounding. His plea contended that the charges had been brought forward to settle political scores rather than to address any genuine statutory infraction.

Upon evaluating the submissions from both parties and conducting a thorough scrutiny of the evidentiary records, the court accepted Khaira’s petition. The bench observed that allowing the ongoing criminal prosecution to proceed would represent an abuse of the judicial process, formally relieving the Congress legislator of all charges framed under the contested complaint.
