London (Rajeev Sharma): The iconic Wembley Stadium witnessed a distinctly Punjabi spectacle on Saturday as Diljit Dosanjh performed before a packed audience of nearly 90,000, marking a major milestone for Punjabi music on the international stage.
The singer brought his Aura World Tour to London on September 12 and became the first Punjabi singer to headline Wembley Stadium, according to the venue.
For an artist whose music has travelled far beyond Punjab, the performance represented another significant step in his international journey. The night also placed Punjabi music alongside the work of some of the biggest names who have previously commanded the Wembley stage.
From Punjab to Wembley
Dosanjh opened the show with a line that immediately connected the occasion to his Punjabi identity.
“Punjabi Aa Gaye Wembley Oye!” he declared, adapting his trademark concert greeting for the historic London venue.
The packed stadium responded with loud cheers as he launched into a selection of his popular songs, including G.O.A.T., Lover, Hass Hass and Born to Shine.
Dressed in traditional attire, Dosanjh appeared on stage shortly after 8pm, beginning a performance that continued for more than two hours. His combination of Bhangra, Punjabi melodies, rap and hip-hop kept the audience dancing throughout the evening.
A Night of Representation
For members of Britain’s large Punjabi community, the concert carried significance beyond entertainment.
Many fans who had grown up hearing Dosanjh’s songs at family gatherings, weddings and during everyday life travelled to Wembley to witness what they saw as a landmark moment for their culture.
The crowd was predominantly South Asian, though people from other communities also joined the celebration.
Some fans compared Dosanjh’s stature to international music legends, reflecting the extraordinary rise of an artist who has taken Punjabi-language music to audiences across continents.
Dosanjh Keeps the Stadium Personal
Performing to tens of thousands can easily create a distance between an artist and the audience. Dosanjh, however, repeatedly attempted to bridge that gap.
He invited fans from different generations onto the stage, including children and an elderly woman. He posed for photographs with them and handed out gifts.
He also took time to acknowledge spectators seated in the farthest sections of the stadium, urging the audience to applaud them and describing those fans as “full of heart”.
The response from the crowd turned parts of the standing area into what resembled a huge Punjabi wedding, with fans enthusiastically copying his dance steps.
Another Global Milestone
Wembley is the latest addition to a growing list of international milestones for Dosanjh.
In 2023, he became the first Punjabi-language singer to perform at Coachella. His subsequent appearances on major global platforms, including the Met Gala, further raised his international profile.
His collaborations and appearances with global personalities and musicians have also helped introduce Punjabi music to audiences unfamiliar with the language.
Dosanjh’s partnership with Ed Sheeran and his appearance with Jimmy Fallon are among the moments that have contributed to his growing recognition outside the traditional Punjabi music market.
His Bollywood work and huge social media following have further expanded his reach.
Ahmedabad Next
The Wembley show also brought an announcement for fans back home.
Dosanjh revealed that he will perform at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in November, adding another major venue to his expanding list of landmark performances.
The London concert eventually moved towards an emotional conclusion with Main Hoon Punjabi, accompanied by fireworks that illuminated the stadium.
For concertgoers Amit and Rani, who said they had attended Dosanjh’s previous UK shows, the Wembley performance stood apart from everything they had experienced before.
They described the atmosphere as extraordinary and said the occasion represented a moment of celebration for Punjabi culture.
‘We Can Do This Too’
Before taking the stage, Dosanjh reflected on the doubts surrounding his decision to perform at such a massive venue.
He recalled being advised to think carefully before booking Wembley because of its enormous capacity.
But for the singer, the size of the venue was part of the point.
He said he wanted Punjabi audiences to leave with the feeling that they too could dream of occupying the world’s biggest stages.
“I want that our people are happy and can say yes, we can do this too!” he said.
His Wembley performance has now added another chapter to that message.
From a village in Punjab to one of London’s most famous sporting and entertainment landmarks, Dosanjh’s journey has become a powerful example of how a regional language and culture can command a global audience without giving up its identity.
