Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): Amritsar Rural Police have busted an alleged smuggling operation involving narcotics, illegal firearms and explosives, arresting seven people and recovering a hand grenade, two pistols and 3.491 kg of heroin.
The operation has prompted an investigation into the suspected links between local criminal elements and overseas smugglers. Preliminary inquiries suggest that the arrested individuals were allegedly in contact with foreign-based handlers who supplied illegal weapons for circulation among criminal groups.
Police are now attempting to establish how the weapons and narcotics entered the network, where they were intended to be delivered and whether additional individuals were involved in the alleged activities.
Cases have been registered at Chatiwind and Lopoke police stations. Investigators are pursuing further leads to identify the network’s suppliers and intended recipients, while efforts are also underway to establish its backward and forward connections.
The recovery of explosives, firearms and a substantial quantity of heroin has brought multiple aspects of the alleged smuggling operation under investigation. Officials are examining the available leads to determine the full scope of the network and establish the role of those arrested.
Punjab Police said the action reflects its continued efforts to curb drug trafficking, prevent the circulation of illegal weapons and explosives, and dismantle organised criminal networks operating in the state.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
