Guwahati (Rajeev Sharma): Although floodwaters have begun receding in several parts of Assam, the human toll from the disaster continues to rise. According to the latest update from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two more flood-related deaths have pushed the overall death toll to 82, even as the number of affected residents has fallen to around 1.92 lakh.
The latest fatalities were reported from the Nazira revenue circle in Sivasagar district and Sonari in Charaideo district. Authorities said relief and rehabilitation operations remain underway in the worst-affected regions, with teams continuing to assist displaced families and restore essential services.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting flood-hit communities, particularly students whose education has been disrupted. He announced that ₹8 crore from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund has been allocated to provide new textbooks, financial assistance, and repair grants for schools damaged during the floods.
In another major relief initiative, the state government has approved ₹41.67 crore under the pending state subsidy component of the PM Surya Ghar scheme. The assistance will benefit 9,289 eligible households in four flood-affected districts. The Chief Minister has directed the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) to ensure that the subsidy is transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts by Tuesday.
The relief effort has also received support from the private sector. Industrialist Gautam Adani has contributed ₹11 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to strengthen ongoing rescue and rehabilitation measures. The Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM) has also announced financial assistance for flood-affected families.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the region is likely to witness another spell of active monsoon conditions over the coming days. Widespread rainfall is expected across Assam and Meghalaya through August 5, while heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast at isolated locations, increasing the possibility of fresh flooding in vulnerable areas.
Authorities have advised residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain alert, follow official advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall as rescue and relief operations continue across the state.
