New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has dismissed as fake a viral video circulating on social media that falsely claims Prime Minister Narendra Modi threatened to take action against students who participated in the recent Jantar Mantar protest.
In a statement issued through its Fact Check unit, PIB said the clip has been artificially altered using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and does not reflect any statement made by the Prime Minister. The agency clarified that the video is a deepfake, created by manipulating an original recording to spread misinformation.
According to PIB, the fabricated clip is being circulated by Pakistan-based propaganda accounts, which falsely portray the Prime Minister as saying that students protesting at Jantar Mantar would face strict consequences. The fact-checking agency categorically rejected the claim, stating that PM Modi never issued any such threat.
To expose the misinformation, PIB shared a comparison between the authentic video and the edited version. It explained that the original clip was related to Parliament passing legislation aimed at strengthening India’s examination system, while the viral version had been digitally altered to insert fabricated audio and misleading captions.
The government has urged citizens to remain cautious while consuming content on social media, especially AI-generated videos that can closely resemble authentic footage. PIB advised users to verify questionable claims through official sources before sharing them online.
Reiterating its warning, the Fact Check unit said the viral video falsely depicting Prime Minister Narendra Modi threatening action against Jantar Mantar protesters is entirely fabricated and should not be treated as genuine.
