Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma) — The Government of Alberta has joined forces with Build Canada Homes to deliver over $385 million in combined funding aimed at expanding below-market housing options throughout the province. The collaborative initiative will finance 21 development proposals this year, adding a minimum of 1,460 subsidized units designed to ease living cost pressures for lower-income households.
Under the framework, the provincial administration has pledged upwards of $165 million through dedicated vehicles such as the Affordable Housing Partnership Program, while Build Canada Homes is injecting up to $220 million via a mixture of direct grants and low-interest loans. The intergovernmental agreement ensures local priorities drive the selection process, basing federal capital allocation directly on regional assessments to avoid bureaucratic overlap.
Provincial and federal officials emphasized that unifying the application pipeline will accelerate construction timelines. By instituting a coordinated intake system, non-profit groups and homebuilders can pursue joint funding without navigating duplicate review procedures. The partnership also introduces an ongoing intergovernmental planning table to ensure federal dollars align with local infrastructure objectives and regional municipal needs.
The expansion aligns with targets established under the province’s 2021 Stronger Foundations strategy, which has seen more than $730 million deployed toward local developments. With the new capital infusion, the province moves closer to its long-range ambition of supporting 25,000 additional affordable housing spaces before the end of 2031.
