Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh): Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has announced an increase in sugarcane prices for the next two crushing seasons, raising the rate to Rs 430 per quintal for 2026-27 and setting a target rate of Rs 450 per quintal for 2027-28.
Haryana Cooperation Minister Dr Arvind Sharma thanked the Chief Minister for the decision, saying the higher prices would provide financial benefits to sugarcane farmers and help cooperative sugar mills secure adequate supplies of the crop.
Under the announcement, the sugarcane price for the 2026-27 crushing season will rise from Rs 415 to Rs 430 per quintal, an increase of Rs 15. The rate is scheduled to increase further to Rs 450 per quintal in the 2027-28 season. This would take the total increase over the two seasons to Rs 35 per quintal compared with the current rate of Rs 415.
Farmers’ Income Expected to Increase
Sharma said the revised rates are expected to increase farmers’ earnings by an estimated Rs 10,000 to Rs 11,500 per acre per crushing season.
According to the minister, a more remunerative price could encourage farmers to expand sugarcane cultivation across Haryana. Greater availability of sugarcane would also help cooperative sugar mills maintain adequate supplies for their operations.
Sharma said the state government was working to protect the interests of sugarcane growers while strengthening the cooperative sugar industry. He described the price increase as part of efforts to improve farmers’ financial position and support the long-term sustainability of sugar mills.
Government Focus on Modernising Cooperative Sugar Mills
The cooperation minister said the government was also pursuing measures to improve the functioning and financial position of cooperative sugar mills.
These efforts include modernising sugar mills, establishing ethanol plants, making better use of available resources and ensuring timely payments to farmers for their produce.
Sharma said the government wanted to ensure that sugarcane growers did not face difficulties in selling their crops or receiving payments. He added that the increase in the sugarcane price could benefit both farmers and the state’s sugar industry.
The announcement sets out a phased increase in sugarcane prices over the next two crushing seasons, with the rate scheduled to reach Rs 450 per quintal in 2027-28.
