Ludhiana: A routine night at Ludhiana Civil Hospital’s emergency department descended into chaos after a group of youths allegedly assaulted doctors, damaged hospital property and clashed with police personnel, leaving patients and medical staff shaken.
The disturbance reportedly began when three young men arrived at the emergency ward seeking medical attention. Hospital sources said a disagreement soon developed between the visitors and the doctors on duty, which quickly escalated into a violent confrontation.
As tempers flared, the youths allegedly abused the doctors and attempted to physically attack them. Fearing for their safety, the medical officers locked themselves inside a room while the accused allegedly tried to break in by repeatedly kicking the door. The incident, which lasted for nearly 30 minutes, disrupted emergency services and created panic throughout the hospital.
Patients and their attendants reportedly moved away from the emergency section as shouting and commotion spread across the premises. A video of the episode, now circulating on social media, shows the accused creating a ruckus outside the doctors’ room.
Police personnel reached the hospital after receiving information about the disturbance. During the operation to control the situation, one of the accused allegedly pulled out a sword and attempted to intimidate police officials. The confrontation resulted in a brief scuffle before the suspects fled the scene.
One of the accused later claimed that the argument began because doctors refused to conduct a proper medical examination and allegedly behaved discourteously. However, the doctors denied the allegations, stating that the youths arrived in an aggressive state, assaulted hospital staff and interfered with emergency medical services.
Investigators have taken the auto-rickshaw used by the accused into custody, while a woman linked to the incident has been detained for questioning. Police teams are also examining CCTV recordings from the hospital to establish the sequence of events and identify everyone involved.
Officials said raids are being conducted to trace the absconding suspects, and appropriate legal action will follow based on the evidence collected. The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over attacks on healthcare professionals and the need for enhanced security at government medical institutions, particularly during night shifts.
