Mumbai (Rajeev Sharma): Comedian and content creator Samay Raina has explained why he is encouraging viewers to join the members-only subscription for his content, saying direct audience support could allow him to produce future seasons without relying on sponsors or outside stakeholders.
While addressing the issue of piracy, Raina acknowledged that there is little that creators can do to completely prevent their content from being circulated illegally online. Instead, he appealed to viewers who enjoy his work to support the show through paid memberships.
“Jokes apart, in today’s age and time there is no stopping piracy. But if you can support by actually taking the membership then that will help us make more content without any sponsors or stakeholders,” Raina said.
The statement has attracted attention because of the scale of the promise. Raina is effectively suggesting that audience memberships could provide enough financial backing for future seasons of The Latent to operate without commercial sponsors or external stakeholders.
The idea also marks an interesting shift in the way digital creators can potentially finance entertainment projects. Rather than depending primarily on advertising and brand partnerships, a sufficiently large paying audience could give creators greater control over their content and production decisions.
However, whether the membership model can generate enough revenue to replace sponsorship money remains to be seen. The economics would depend on factors such as the number of paying members, subscription pricing, production costs and how consistently viewers remain subscribed.
For now, Raina’s statement remains a commitment for the future rather than an established change in the show’s business model. If the next season does indeed arrive without sponsors, it would provide a real-world test of whether a large creator-led entertainment project can be sustained primarily through direct audience funding.
The announcement has therefore left fans with a simple question: can The Latent really become a completely sponsor-free show?
The answer will likely come with the next season.
