Washington/Beijing (Rajeev Sharma): US President Donald Trump expressed confidence about the future of Washington’s relationship with Beijing as he began a major diplomatic summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, saying bilateral ties were set to improve significantly in the coming months.
Trump’s visit to China, his first since returning to the White House in 2025, began with a ceremonial welcome at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, where Xi personally received the American leader ahead of high-level talks expected to shape the next phase of US-China engagement.
The discussions are expected to address several pressing global concerns, including trade stability, the conflict in West Asia, technology restrictions and military tensions surrounding Taiwan.
Accompanied by senior administration officials and a powerful delegation of American business executives, Trump is expected to push for expanded access for US companies in China while seeking stronger commitments on trade cooperation.
The opening ceremony reflected the importance of the summit, featuring military honours, national anthems and a carefully choreographed welcome that underscored Beijing’s diplomatic emphasis on the visit.
