Gurpreet Singh :- A growing demand for transparency in electricity billing has emerged in Punjab, with consumers and social voices urging authorities to include detailed meter readings in mobile bill notifications. At present, the SMS alerts sent by the power utility only mention the account number and total payable amount, leaving consumers uncertain about their actual electricity usage.
Residents have pointed out that the absence of previous and current meter readings in these messages makes it difficult to verify the accuracy of bills. This lack of clarity, they say, often leads to confusion and mistrust towards the billing system.
Several social activists and concerned citizens have called on the authorities to revise the format of these notifications to include both old and new meter readings, enabling consumers to better understand their consumption patterns.
Young residents from the area have also emphasized that in the digital age, transparency and accessibility of information are essential. They believe that adding detailed consumption data in SMS alerts would not only improve accountability but also reduce disputes related to billing.
The demand highlights a broader call for reforms in consumer services, with expectations that the power utility will take necessary steps to enhance clarity and build trust among its users.
