Prime Minister Carney’s China Trip Could Open New Opportunities for B.C. Industries

PM Mark Carney announces first projects to be reviewed by the new Major Projects Office

British Columbia (Rajeev Sharma): As Prime Minister Mark Carney prepares for a trade mission to China from January 13 to 17, officials in British Columbia are optimistic that the visit could create fresh opportunities for the province’s industries. Carney is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss trade, energy, agriculture, and international security, according to an announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

B.C. Energy Minister Adrian Dix highlighted the potential benefits for the province’s energy sector. “We’re hopeful that the prime minister will make the case for British Columbia LNG, British Columbia mining, ports, and other projects,” Dix said, emphasizing that B.C.’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) is among the lowest-emission in the world. He added that four LNG projects are currently under construction in the province.

LNG, derived from natural gas often extracted through hydraulic fracturing in northeastern B.C. and Alberta, is considered “cleaner” than coal or oil, though some analysts question the environmental impact of its production. Nevertheless, Dix argued that Canada’s economic strength and emerging industries give B.C. a competitive advantage in international markets.

B.C. Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon, who is leading a trade delegation to India alongside Premier David Eby, said Carney’s trip to China could help diversify trade networks and strengthen economic resilience. “China is the world’s second-largest economy, and there’s a lot of opportunity for B.C. businesses,” Kahlon noted, pointing out existing people-to-people connections between the regions.

Unlike B.C.’s previous trade mission to Asia in June 2025, China will now be a focal destination, offering a potential gateway for investment, exports, and strategic partnerships for the province’s energy, mining, and infrastructure sectors.

Officials in B.C. say they are watching the visit closely, hoping it will reinforce the province’s position in global markets and expand opportunities for local jobs and projects.
