Chandigarh (National Times): Senior BJP leader Sunil Jakhar issued a powerful clarification on Monday following his recent remarks suggesting a potential BJP-Akali Dal alliance to ensure communal harmony in Punjab. Emphasizing that his comments were rooted in understanding Punjab’s emotional and social fabric, Jakhar outlined a heartfelt vision for how political parties, particularly the BJP, should engage with the state.
“Punjab is not just a state … it’s a deeply emotional and self-respecting society,” said Jakhar in his statement, reflecting on the sentiment-driven politics of the region. “Punjabis are resilient, proud of their history, and driven by sentiment. But over time, they feel they have been wronged, their sacrifices unrecognized, and their emotional and political contributions overlooked.”
Jakhar stressed that the people of Punjab seek dignity and recognition, not just financial benefits. “They seek more than financial packages … they seek recognition, respect, and a sense of belonging,” he said, highlighting the symbolic importance of cultural identity. “One must understand that pagri (dastar) means not just a turban but also symbolizes Sardari – self-esteem.”
Addressing the BJP’s role, he called for a shift in strategy from administrative politics to emotional connect. “The people of Punjab need a party that speaks from the heart — not just as administrators but as one of their own,” he said, urging the BJP to reposition itself by promoting young, credible, honest, and uncompromised leaders who reflect the true spirit of Punjab.
Jakhar also made it clear that the objective must go beyond short-term political gains. “Our focus should not be about electoral gains but gaining the trust of Punjabis,” he added.
His remarks come at a time when speculation is mounting over potential realignments in Punjab’s political landscape, especially with discussions around the rejoining of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) with the BJP-led NDA. Jakhar’s statement appears aimed at framing any such move not as opportunistic but as a strategic and emotional outreach to rebuild trust with a historically significant and sensitive electorate.
