Steven Guilbeault Expected to Leave Carney Caucus as India-Canada Tensions Continue

Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Former Liberal environment minister Steven Guilbeault is expected to leave Prime Minister Mark Carney’s caucus, according to reports by The Globe and Mail. Sources also say the longtime environmental advocate may resign as MP for the Montreal riding of Laurier–Sainte–Marie, though plans could still change.

Guilbeault, who represented the riding since 2019, reportedly resigned from cabinet last year over disagreements with the government’s energy policies, including support for a new Alberta-to-West Coast pipeline and changes to environmental assessment rules.

Sources say Guilbeault is expected to address Parliament on Wednesday and meet with current and former staff afterward.

Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions between Canada and India remain high after India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, criticized Canadian security agencies in an interview with The Globe and Mail.

Patnaik claimed CSIS had been politically influenced and described RCMP investigations into alleged Indian interference activities as based on “fantasy” allegations. He also said the investigation into the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar had become politicized.

The remarks are expected to further strain relations between Ottawa and New Delhi, which have remained tense since Canada raised concerns about alleged foreign interference and transnational repression activities linked to India.
