Srinagar (Rajeev Sharma): The terrorist attack on two migrant labourers in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district has claimed a second life, with the injured worker succumbing to his injuries while undergoing treatment, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The incident occurred on Friday evening at a brick kiln in the Kelam area of south Kashmir, where terrorists allegedly opened fire on the workers without warning.
The first victim, Deepak Ratray, died shortly after the attack before he could receive medical attention. The second labourer, Bopinder, was initially treated at Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, before being shifted to SKIMS Hospital in Srinagar, where doctors later declared him dead.
Officials said both victims were in their twenties and had travelled from Chhattisgarh to Jammu and Kashmir for work.
Following the attack, security agencies launched a massive search operation in the area to track down the perpetrators. Additional security has also been deployed, and an investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The latest incident comes days after terrorists allegedly shot dead a police officer in Anantnag, raising fresh concerns over militant activity in south Kashmir.
Attacks targeting non-local workers have occurred in the past as well. In February 2024, two migrant workers from Punjab—Amritpal Singh and Rohit Masih—lost their lives after terrorists opened fire on them in Srinagar’s Shaheed Gunj locality.
Authorities have condemned the latest killings, while security forces continue efforts to identify those behind the attack and prevent further incidents targeting civilians in the region.
