Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Canada has named Angad Singh Dhillon as its next Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Arab Emirates, bringing a diplomat with family connections to Punjab into a significant overseas posting.
The appointment was announced on September 25 by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand. Dhillon will succeed Radha Krishna Panday as Canada’s top diplomatic representative in the UAE.
Dhillon has most recently served as Director of Operations and Stakeholder Relations in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Office. During his time there, he was involved in efforts to strengthen Canada’s engagement with major international partners, including India and China.
His earlier experience includes serving as chief of staff to two federal cabinet ministers responsible for small business and transport. In those positions, he worked on Canada’s participation in major international forums, including the G7, G20, United Nations General Assembly and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.
Dhillon’s family roots in Ghungrana village in Punjab have added particular interest to his appointment among the Punjabi community in Canada and overseas.
His new role comes as Canada and the UAE continue to develop their economic and diplomatic relationship. Trade, investment and broader cooperation have become important areas of engagement between the two countries.
Dhillon will now represent Canada in the UAE at a time when both governments are working to expand economic ties and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
The appointment also adds a new chapter to Dhillon’s public service career, which has included senior advisory and political roles at the federal level before his move into the diplomatic arena.
