Morinda, Punjab (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab Police have ruled out any immediate connection between a firing incident involving a witness in a case against Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh and the legal proceedings against the jailed leader, stating that preliminary findings indicate the episode was triggered by a road rage dispute.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when Varinder Singh Mavi, a resident of Salempur village and a witness in the Ajnala case linked to Amritpal Singh, alerted police after alleging that an individual had fired at him.
Responding swiftly, police teams reached the spot and began an investigation. Officials said the accused, identified as Jasbir Singh alias Kala of Samroli village, allegedly confronted Mavi following a dispute on the road. According to the investigation, the accused was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the altercation.
Police said the suspect allegedly fired a shot into the air before chasing Mavi’s vehicle towards his village and threatening those travelling with him. He was later detained by the police. No injuries were reported in the incident.
A case has been registered at the Sadar Morinda Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act, and further investigation is in progress.
The incident sparked speculation on social media, with several posts alleging that the firing was aimed at intimidating a witness connected to cases against Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act.
However, Rupnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh said there is no evidence at this stage to support such claims. He urged the public to avoid drawing conclusions based on unverified social media posts, adding that the inquiry has so far established the incident as a case of road rage.
Meanwhile, Advocate Parminder Singh Wig, who represents complainants and witnesses in matters related to Amritpal Singh, expressed concern over the safety of witnesses. He called for stronger implementation of witness protection measures, saying individuals associated with sensitive cases should receive adequate security in accordance with legal provisions.
Police have maintained that every aspect of the incident is being examined and that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
