NPPA Revises Prices of 39 Drug Formulations to Improve Access to Affordable Treatment

Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): In a fresh move to make healthcare more affordable, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has notified revised retail prices for 39 drug formulations used in the treatment of several common and chronic ailments.

The decision covers medicines prescribed for conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart-related disorders and other health issues. The revised prices have been fixed under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO), which empowers the regulator to ensure that essential medicines remain available at reasonable rates.

With the latest notification, pharmaceutical companies manufacturing or marketing these formulations will have to comply with the prices approved by the NPPA. The medicines cannot be sold above the notified retail price, except for applicable Goods and Services Tax (GST), wherever permitted under the rules.

Officials said the exercise is part of the authority’s routine monitoring of medicine prices to strike a balance between consumer affordability and industry sustainability. The list includes formulations from multiple therapeutic categories that are widely prescribed in hospitals and clinics across the country.

The revised pricing is expected to benefit patients who depend on long-term medication, especially those managing lifestyle diseases that require continuous treatment. Lower medicine costs could also reduce the financial burden on families dealing with recurring healthcare expenses.

The NPPA has instructed drug manufacturers to implement the notified prices immediately and ensure compliance with the regulatory framework. Companies found charging more than the approved rates could face action under the provisions of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order and other applicable laws.

The authority regularly reviews pricing proposals submitted by pharmaceutical firms before fixing retail prices for new formulations entering the market. The latest notification reflects the government’s continued efforts to keep essential medicines within the reach of patients while maintaining transparency in the pharmaceutical sector.
