India and Indonesia Review Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Ahead of PM Modi’s Jakarta Visit

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): India and Indonesia reviewed the entire spectrum of their expanding bilateral relations during the eighth India-Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting in New Delhi on Sunday. Co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Indonesian counterpart Sugiono, the high-level dialogue set the stage for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming state visit to Jakarta next month, which is expected to be part of a wider Indo-Pacific regional tour including Australia and New Zealand.

The ministerial-level talks, returning after a four-year hiatus, provided a vital institutional mechanism to advance commitments made during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s landmark state visit to India as the Republic Day Chief Guest in January 2025. Both ministers expressed strong optimism regarding the upward trajectory of the relationship, which has flourished since being elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The ongoing diplomatic momentum coincides with the implementation of the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework running from 2026 to 2030.

During the substantive discussions, the two sides focused on translating top-level leadership agreements into concrete outcomes across a wide array of sectors. Key areas of evaluation included political coordination, defense and security, maritime cooperation, shipping, trade, and investment. The ministers also explored deeper collaboration in emerging and critical fields such as fintech, digital connectivity, space exploration, education, infrastructure, and the supply of critical minerals and fertilizers. Public health and pharmaceuticals also featured prominently on the agenda.

Beyond bilateral matters, Jaishankar and Sugiono exchanged perspectives on pressing regional and global developments of mutual interest. They underscored the necessity of robust multilateral coordination and a strengthened India-ASEAN engagement to maintain stability amid the evolving geopolitical landscape of the Indo-Pacific. Foreign Minister Sugiono noted that Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to Jakarta represents an essential opportunity to deliver tangible benefits to the citizens of both countries while cementing their shared security architecture.
