Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): Amritsar Police have reported a major breakthrough in the investigation into the killing of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh, with accused Deepak Singh dying after being injured during an exchange of fire with police personnel.
The development took place during an operation linked to FIR No. 281, registered on September 18 in connection with the killing of ASI Harjit Singh in the line of duty at Dana Mandi, under the jurisdiction of Police Station Gate Hakima in Amritsar.
According to Amritsar Police Commissioner, investigators used CCTV recordings, technical evidence, tower-dump analysis and local intelligence to establish the identity and whereabouts of Deepak Singh, a resident of Mulechak in Amritsar.
Accused Opened Fire At Police Teams
Police said an operation was launched to apprehend Deepak Singh after tracing his movements.
During the operation, the accused allegedly opened fire at police teams deployed at naka points. Police personnel returned fire, describing the action as retaliatory fire in self-defence.
Deepak Singh sustained injuries during the exchange and was subsequently taken to a hospital. He later died from his injuries, according to the police.
Police also said another suspect involved in the case managed to flee from the area by taking advantage of darkness.
Pistol, Cartridges And Activa Recovered
Following the operation, police said they recovered a .30-bore pistol along with two magazines and eight live cartridges.
An Activa scooter and a mobile phone were also recovered. Police said the scooter was allegedly used in connection with the crime.
ASI Harjit Singh Was Killed On September 18
ASI Harjit Singh, service number 1599/ASR City, was killed while performing his duty on September 18.
The incident occurred at Dana Mandi within the limits of Gate Hakima police station in Amritsar and led to an extensive investigation by the Commissionerate Police.
Police said the investigation is continuing, with efforts underway to trace the suspect who allegedly escaped during the operation and establish the complete sequence of events surrounding the ASI’s killing.
