Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh): Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Thursday accused the opposition of spreading misleading information about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and urged eligible voters to verify their names in the voter list.
Addressing a programme during the ‘Loktantra Bachao–Arajakta Hatao’ foot march in Karnal, Saini said the revision exercise was aimed at making electoral rolls more accurate, transparent and reliable. Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off the march.
Saini said every citizen’s vote was an important democratic right and that all eligible voters must be included in the electoral rolls. He maintained that the government was committed to ensuring that no eligible person was deprived of the right to vote.
Saini asks voters to verify names in electoral rolls
The Chief Minister said electoral rolls should be checked for entries of deceased persons, duplicate registrations and incorrect records, with corrections made through the prescribed procedure.
He appealed to residents to check their own names and those of their family members in the voter list. If they find any errors, they should submit claims or objections to the relevant election authorities in accordance with the rules.
Comparing the exercise to cleaning homes before Diwali, Saini said maintaining accurate electoral rolls was necessary to strengthen the democratic system. He added that the process was not directed against any individual or community.
He also called on young people to remain informed about democratic processes, understand the facts and respect constitutional institutions.
BJP leaders participate in Karnal foot march
Saini thanked women, young people, farmers, party workers and other participants who joined the march. He urged BJP workers to visit villages and wards and help eligible citizens verify their names in the electoral rolls.
He specifically asked party workers to assist senior citizens, women and first-time voters, and guide anyone whose name was missing through the prescribed application process.
The march was attended by Union Minister Manohar Lal, former Union Minister and Haryana BJP in-charge Smriti Irani, state BJP president Archana Gupta, Cabinet Ministers Krishan Lal Panwar, Rao Narbir Singh, Mahipal Dhanda, Arvind Sharma and Krishan Bedi, among other party leaders, legislators and officials.
