Mohali (Gurpreet Singh): A late-night protest broke out at Chitkara University in Mohali after rumours spread among students about the alleged disappearance of two female students.
The situation reportedly became tense as a large number of students gathered on campus. Videos circulating on social media purportedly show damage to property and confrontations between protesting students and police personnel.
Senior police officers reached the university after receiving information about the unrest. Officials held discussions with students and representatives of the university administration to understand how the situation had developed.
DSP Sukhdev Singh later said the police had taken note of claims circulating among students and on social media that two girls from the university were missing. However, officials have so far not received specific details identifying the alleged missing students.
According to the police, neither the names nor the identities of the two purportedly missing students have been established. Based on the information available so far, authorities suspect that the incident may have originated from an unverified rumour.
Despite this, police have taken the students’ complaint seriously and said the matter will be examined. Officers are expected to speak individually with students and verify the information before reaching any conclusion.
Police said that if the investigation establishes that a student is actually missing, appropriate legal action will follow and a detailed investigation will be launched.
Authorities also sought to reassure parents that the situation on the university campus is currently under control and that students are safe. Police personnel remain deployed at the site, with security arrangements being maintained.
The incident comes amid heightened public attention around student safety following the recent killing of a 20-year-old student during a clash at Punjab University, which had sparked widespread concern.
