Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): A 23-year-old Chestermere woman is facing an extortion charge after Calgary police alleged she acted as an insider in a case where private information was used to target a Calgary woman and her family with threats, demands for money and an apparent shooting.
The Calgary Police Service announced the charge against Kanureet Kaur, 23, of Chestermere, on September 11, 2026, as investigators continued probing a series of extortion incidents targeting members of Calgary’s South Asian community.
According to police, Kaur allegedly provided personal information including home addresses and business details that helped other suspects locate and intimidate the victim and her family.
The situation allegedly escalated rapidly. The victim received demands for money and violent threats through WhatsApp. Police say that approximately 12 hours after the initial contact, an unknown shooter opened fire outside the victim’s residence in Skyview Ranch. Kaur was arrested and charged with one count of extortion. She has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on October 6, 2026.
The investigation has also resulted in charges against a 17-year-old Calgary male, who faces one count of extortion. His identity cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police are also seeking Tanveer Singh, 21, of Calgary, who is wanted on an outstanding warrant for possession of stolen property over $5,000. Investigators allege the stolen getaway vehicle connected to the investigation was used in the shootings.
The latest charges add another troubling dimension to Calgary’s ongoing extortion crisis, particularly concerns surrounding the alleged use of insiders and access to victims’ personal information.
CPS continues to investigate the case and is seeking information about others who may have been involved.
All allegations against the accused remain before the courts, and none of the charges has been proven.
