Fatehgarh Sahib (Gurpreet Singh): A pilgrimage to Gangotri ended in tragedy for a group of four Kanwariyas from Kotkapura after they were allegedly struck by a speeding car on the Sirhind–Mandi Gobindgarh highway in Fatehgarh Sahib district.
Three of the pilgrims died in the crash, while the fourth sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The victims were reportedly on their way back to Faridkot after collecting Gangajal from Gangotri for their religious journey. The accident occurred on the highway stretch between Sirhind and Mandi Gobindgarh.
Three pilgrims killed on the spot
The deceased have been identified as Jagdish Mittal (40) of Doctor Harpal Street, Mahendra Pal (43) of Harinau Road and Deepak Kumar (42) of Surgapuri, all residents of Kotkapura.
The fourth pilgrim, Mukesh Goyal, who lives near the Government Girls School in Kotkapura, suffered critical injuries. He was rushed to a hospital, where his condition is reported to be serious.
Police searching for fleeing driver
The vehicle involved in the accident reportedly fled immediately after hitting the pilgrims. Police have begun efforts to identify the driver and vehicle involved.
Investigators are examining CCTV recordings from the highway and nearby locations to reconstruct the circumstances leading to the collision and trace the accused driver.
Police officials said action will be taken against the person responsible once identified and apprehended.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over Kotkapura, where the three deceased pilgrims lived. The investigation into the fatal collision is currently underway.
