Sikkim (Rajeev Sharma): A landslide triggered by intense and persistent rainfall caused significant damage in Rimbi village of Sikkim’s Gyalshing district, officials said on Friday.
The incident took place late Thursday night after heavy rain continued in the area, leading to a landslide that affected residential properties and other structures in the village.
Several houses were either destroyed or suffered extensive damage, with government accommodation also among the affected buildings. Despite the scale of the destruction, officials confirmed that no deaths have been reported so far.
The latest incident has raised concerns over the impact of continuing heavy rainfall in the mountainous state, where saturated slopes can increase the risk of landslides and damage to homes and infrastructure.
Chief Minister directs officials to remain vigilant
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed concern over the situation and said the safety of residents affected by the landslide remained the government’s immediate priority.
Tamang has directed local officials to maintain a high level of alert, monitor developments in the affected area and take necessary steps to protect residents.
Authorities have also been asked to respond to emerging risks as rainfall continues.
The Chief Minister appealed to people living in and around Rimbi to exercise caution, follow instructions and advisories issued by local authorities and remain alert to any further developments.
He also encouraged residents to assist one another during the difficult situation.
Government assesses situation
The state administration is continuing to monitor conditions in Rimbi and surrounding areas while taking steps to address the damage caused by the landslide.
With heavy rain continuing to pose risks in parts of Sikkim, authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary exposure to vulnerable areas and remain attentive to official warnings.
While the landslide has caused considerable property damage, the absence of reported casualties has provided some relief as officials work to assess the full extent of the destruction and ensure the safety of affected families.
