Glasgow (Rajeev Sharma): India delivered one of its most successful days in Commonwealth Games history on Saturday, producing an outstanding medal-winning performance across boxing, judo, athletics and para sports. Powered by a record-breaking display from its boxers, the Indian contingent climbed to fourth place in the overall standings with 38 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver and eight bronze.
Boxing Leads India’s Golden Charge
Indian boxers stole the spotlight by claiming seven gold medals, the country’s best-ever performance in the sport at the Commonwealth Games. The impressive campaign also earned India the top position in the boxing medal standings with a total of 10 medals, including three silvers.
The women’s squad played a pivotal role in the historic feat. Jaismine Lamboria, Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghanghas, Sakshi Chaudhary and Arundhati Choudhary emerged as Commonwealth champions in their respective weight categories, while Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain finished with a silver medal.
In the men’s section, Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal captured gold medals, whereas Jadumani Singh and heavyweight Narender Berwal settled for silver.
Historic Success Continues in Judo
India’s judokas also continued their remarkable run, with Unnati Sharma adding a bronze medal in the women’s 63kg category after a commanding victory in the medal bout.
Her podium finish increased India’s judo medal tally to four, marking the nation’s most successful Commonwealth Games campaign in the discipline. Earlier, Harsh Singh and Asmita Dey had become India’s first Commonwealth Games gold medallists in judo, while Yamini Mourya contributed a silver medal.
Gulveer Singh Creates History
Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh further enhanced his growing reputation by clinching bronze in the men’s 5,000 metres. Combined with his earlier silver in the 10,000 metres, the achievement made him the first Indian track athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Commonwealth Games.
India also celebrated success in the men’s triple jump, where Praveen Chithravel secured silver and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran claimed bronze, ensuring a double podium finish for the country.
Para Athletes Cap Off Best-Ever Campaign
The para athletics team continued India’s medal rush with another impressive performance. Soman Rana struck gold in the men’s F57 shot put, while Shubham Juyal secured silver in the same event to complete an Indian one-two finish.
Overall, India’s para contingent concluded the Games with seven medals—three gold, two silver and two bronze—making it the country’s finest-ever performance in Commonwealth Games para sports. The athletes also registered a Commonwealth Games record and an Asian record during the competition.
Strong Finish in Sight
With the Games entering their final day, India remained in medal contention in track cycling and para track cycling. The performances across multiple disciplines reflected the growing depth of Indian sport and placed the contingent in a strong position to finish the Games on a high note.
