Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that monsoon activity will remain active across Punjab and Chandigarh over the next few days, with widespread rain expected to continue until August 5. Several districts are likely to experience light to moderate showers, while isolated areas may receive heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds.
Weather officials have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly during periods of intense rainfall, as gusty winds and lightning could affect normal life. The department expects rainfall intensity to gradually reduce after August 6, with only scattered light showers likely in some places.
Bathinda Records Highest Temperature
Despite intermittent rain in parts of the state, Bathinda emerged as the hottest location in Punjab, recording a maximum temperature of 37.1°C. Across the state, the average maximum temperature witnessed only a marginal increase of 0.1°C over the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, Ludhiana recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 24°C.
Chandigarh Weather Remains Warm and Humid
In Chandigarh, the maximum temperature settled at 33.8°C, around 1°C above the seasonal average, while the minimum temperature was 26°C, slightly below normal. Humidity levels fluctuated between 57 and 79 per cent, creating warm and humid conditions.
According to the IMD, the city is likely to witness maximum temperatures between 33°C and 34°C, with minimum temperatures expected to remain in the 23°C to 24°C range over the next five days.
Rainfall Deficit Persists
Although recent showers have brought some relief, Chandigarh continues to face a rainfall shortfall this monsoon season. Since June 1, the city has received 337.2 mm of rain, which is about 21.3 per cent below the seasonal average. Meteorologists, however, believe the forecast rainfall over the coming days could help narrow the deficit.
Residents Asked to Exercise Caution
The weather department has urged people to avoid taking shelter under trees or venturing into open spaces during thunderstorms and lightning. Authorities have also warned of possible waterlogging in low-lying areas following heavy spells of rain and advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather conditions.
With the monsoon expected to stay active through the first week of August, residents have been encouraged to keep track of official weather updates and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.
