New Delhi (Rajeev Sharma): Relatives of Delhi Police personnel who sustained injuries during the recent protest at Jantar Mantar addressed the media on Thursday, describing the physical and emotional impact of the violence on their families.
Among those who spoke was the daughter of a Delhi Police sub-inspector, who recounted the circumstances surrounding her father’s injuries while he was deployed to maintain law and order at the protest site.
According to her, the officer had been stationed on the front line near the barricades as thousands of demonstrators gathered at Jantar Mantar. She said he had previously expressed concern that the character of the protest had changed over time, telling his family that he believed individuals with disruptive intentions had become part of the gathering.
Describing the events of July 25, she alleged that her father was overpowered by a section of the crowd near the main stage and subjected to a violent assault while carrying out his duties. She claimed he suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, where he remained unconscious for nearly four hours before regaining consciousness.
The officer was later brought home by fellow policemen, she said, adding that the sight of his blood-soaked uniform reflected the severity of the attack and left the family deeply shaken.
The family appealed for strict action against those responsible for the alleged assault, saying police personnel deserve adequate protection while performing their duties during large public gatherings. They also urged authorities to ensure that those involved in acts of violence are identified and held accountable.
Authorities have not yet publicly responded to the specific allegations made during the press conference. Meanwhile, investigations into the violence reported during the Jantar Mantar protest are ongoing.
