Paris (International Bureau NT): Prime Minister Mark Carney met with French President Emmanuel Macron during his bilateral visit to France, reaffirming the strong partnership between Canada and France and their shared commitment to economic growth, security, and innovation. The two leaders discussed expanding trade and investment in key sectors, including energy, critical minerals, advanced technologies, and aerospace. They highlighted France’s recent purchase of two additional DHC-515 water bomber aircraft manufactured by De Havilland Aircraft of Canada in Calgary, underscoring growing industrial cooperation between the two countries.
Carney and Macron also agreed to advance defence and security priorities, welcoming the signing of a new General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA). The agreement is expected to strengthen defence collaboration, unlock procurement opportunities, create jobs for Canadian workers, and provide economic benefits to both nations. The leaders emphasized deeper cooperation in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum innovation, building on recent commitments to enhance research, talent development, and resilient supply chains.
Ahead of next week’s 2026 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Évian, they pledged to work closely on addressing global economic challenges, strengthening energy security, and promoting international coordination on AI safety. Carney and Macron also discussed ongoing geopolitical issues and reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine. They welcomed Canada’s commitment to provide $100 million in food and medical assistance to Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, announced earlier in Paris by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand.
The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact and looked forward to meeting again at the G7 Summit in Évian.
