Washington (Rajeev Sharma): The United States has carried out a new series of military strikes against targets in Iran, with officials describing the operation as a defensive response to threats against American personnel and commercial shipping operating in regional waters.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the strikes were conducted following orders from Commander-in-Chief Donald Trump, citing ongoing security concerns and repeated hostile actions attributed to Iran.
Ahead of the operation, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth made it clear that Washington was prepared to increase military pressure while leaving the door open for negotiations. He said Iran still has an opportunity to avoid further escalation by accepting a deal proposed by the Trump administration.
According to Hegseth, the latest military campaign is intended to weaken Iran’s operational capabilities while creating conditions favourable for diplomacy. He maintained that every action undertaken by the US military is carefully planned to protect American interests and ensure freedom of navigation in strategically important waterways.
The Defence Secretary praised CENTCOM’s recent achievements, arguing that the command has significantly altered the balance of power in the region. He claimed the operations have improved security around the Strait of Hormuz and reduced Iran’s ability to threaten maritime traffic.
Commenting on Iran’s military response, Hegseth asserted that many of Tehran’s attacks have either failed or been intercepted by US defence systems, demonstrating what he described as the effectiveness of American air and missile defence capabilities.
He also provided an update on the crew of a US Apache helicopter involved in a recent incident, confirming that both pilots survived and are recovering well. Hegseth commended their actions under combat conditions and praised the rescue teams responsible for bringing them to safety.
Emphasising that diplomacy remains the preferred path, the Pentagon chief said military operations are designed to reinforce the United States’ negotiating position rather than replace dialogue. However, he warned that if Iran refuses to engage constructively, additional action would follow.
The latest developments underscore rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the US administration insisting that continued military pressure and diplomatic outreach are part of a coordinated strategy aimed at achieving what officials describe as a durable and comprehensive agreement.
