Gurpreet Singh :- Commemorations marking the 42nd anniversary of Operation Blue Star were held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on Friday, with thousands of devotees gathering to pay their respects and participate in religious observances.
Addressing the Sikh community, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj described the events of June 1984 as an unforgettable chapter in Sikh history. He said the episode, often referred to as the “Third Ghallughara” by sections of the Sikh community, was unique because, unlike earlier historical assaults by external forces, it took place within the country and targeted Sikhism’s central religious shrine.
The Jathedar said the resistance put up during the military operation continues to be remembered for its intensity and determination. He also emphasised that Sikhs have consistently upheld their distinct religious identity and have made significant sacrifices to protect their faith and values.
Referring to contemporary concerns, he said Sikhs should continue to assert their identity while contributing positively to society. He stressed that Sikhs are equal citizens of the country and should be treated with dignity and respect.
Calling upon the global Sikh diaspora to maintain strong ties with Punjab, Giani Gargaj described the state as the community’s homeland and urged Sikh families to remain connected with their religious and cultural roots. He also encouraged parents to familiarise younger generations with Sikh history and heritage.
Meanwhile, extensive security arrangements were put in place across Amritsar for the anniversary events. Punjab Police and other security agencies were deployed in and around the Golden Temple complex, while more than 1,000 task force personnel were stationed by the SGPC to assist in crowd management and security.
