India-US Set to Conclude First Phase of Trade Deal by Mid-July, Says Piyush Goyal

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): India and the United States are on track to finalize the first tranche of a bilateral trade agreement by the middle of next month, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Friday. The announcement signals substantial progress in high-level negotiations aimed at deepening economic integration between the two global partners.

Minister Goyal shared details of intense diplomatic activity in New Delhi, noting that a comprehensive delegation of American trade officials engaged in deep discussions with their Indian counterparts from June 2 to 4. He confirmed that the two sides are rapidly moving toward closing all remaining open ends of the initial phase. This first tranche is expected to secure vital preferential market access for Indian exporters over global competitors, with a higher-level US delegation projected to arrive in India by the end of June to pave the way for the mid-July execution.

The optimistic timeline from New Delhi emerged shortly after US President Donald Trump expressed parallel confidence at the White House regarding an imminent breakthrough. While President Trump reiterated his long-standing critique that India had historically placed high tariffs on American products, he emphasized that his strong personal rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains a driving force behind the current breakthrough. He affirmed that despite past friction over trade imbalances, Washington and New Delhi will successfully reach a deal.

The latest round of technical negotiations in the capital focused on market access, the mutual reduction of tariff barriers, supply chain resilience, and sector-specific commercial grievances. This initial pact is part of a broader, multi-phase economic roadmap designed to complement the rapidly expanding strategic and defense partnership between the two democracies. The United States continues to rank as one of India’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade volumes expanding steadily in recent years.
