Bengal Govt Makes Singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ Mandatory in Madrasas

Rajeev Sharma :- The West Bengal Government has extended its directive mandating the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ during morning prayers to madrasas functioning under the Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education Department, further widening the scope of the policy already enforced in schools across the state.

Earlier, the state administration had made it compulsory for students in all government and government-aided schools to sing the national song before the commencement of classes as part of the morning assembly. The latest move brings madrasa institutions under the ambit of the same directive, with authorities instructed to ensure strict implementation.

The decision is being viewed as a significant shift in the state’s educational and administrative framework. While supporters have described the move as an effort to promote national unity and discipline among students, the development has also sparked intense political debate and discussion across various quarters.

Officials maintain that the directive is aimed at creating uniformity in educational institutions across the state. However, the issue has quickly gained political attention, with differing opinions emerging over the implementation of the policy in minority-run educational institutions.
