Haryana Accelerates 2027 Census Operations with Rapid House Listing Progress

Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh)— The state of Haryana has recorded remarkable progress in its house listing and housing census operations under the ongoing 2027 Census. Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi conducted a comprehensive review meeting via video conferencing with divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, municipal chiefs, and other senior officials to assess the state’s preparedness for completing this monumental national task within the stipulated timeframe. During the session, Rastogi directed all civil servants to treat the census operation with the highest priority, demanding complete commitment, accountability, and efficiency from field workers. He firmly stated that any negligence or lack of co-operation from staff assigned to census duties would result in strict disciplinary action, noting that accurate census data is crucial for policy formulation, resource allocation, and the effective implementation of welfare schemes.

Providing a statistical overview of the operation, Haryana Director of Census Operations Dr. Lalit Jain reported that work has already commenced in over 97 percent of the designated house listing blocks across the state. House listing activities have reached a hundred percent commencement rate in several districts, including Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Karnal, Fatehabad, Hansi, Charkhi Dadri, and Faridabad. This milestone highlights the efficiency and dedication of the district administrations, enumerators, and supervisory staff. Charkhi Dadri is currently leading the state with more than 32 percent of its assigned work already completed, while districts like Fatehabad, Hansi, Jind, and Mahendragarh are also showing notable advancements. In urban sectors, the Panipat Municipal Corporation is spearheading the progress, closely followed by Rohtak and Faridabad.

To ensure the smooth execution of these operations, Financial Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary of Revenue and Disaster Management Dr. Sumita Misra emphasized the necessity of active co-operation from municipal committees, village heads, and resident welfare associations. She urged local bodies to actively involve village councils in the census process and initiate comprehensive information, education, and communication activities to raise public awareness. Furthermore, district administrations were advised to flexibly adjust the working hours of census personnel to ensure that all field tasks are finalized well before the approaching deadlines.

The review meeting also addressed the administrative preparations for the upcoming Special Intensive Revision exercise, which is scheduled to commence on June 15, 2026. Officials engaged in detailed discussions on streamlining training programmes and maintaining a functional synergy between census duties and the revision tasks to prevent overburdening the field staff. To alleviate immediate pressure, the Chief Secretary announced that booth level officers currently deployed for census operations might be exempted from election-related duties until May 31, 2026.
