Online Traffic Challans Soon in Amritsar; 1,300 CCTV Cameras to Monitor Violations

Gurpreet Singh :- Traffic violators in Amritsar will soon find challans reaching their homes as the city prepares to launch an automated online challan system powered by an extensive CCTV surveillance network.

Under the new arrangement, nearly 1,300 CCTV cameras installed across major roads, intersections and busy markets will monitor vehicular movement round the clock. Authorities said the system is aimed at improving traffic discipline and reducing violations on city roads.

Officials from the traffic wing stated that motorists would be required to strictly follow lane discipline and stop behind zebra crossings and designated stop lines at traffic signals. Vehicles crossing these markings during a red light phase would also attract automatic challans.

The system will digitally capture vehicle registration numbers along with photographic evidence of the violation, eliminating the need for direct intervention by traffic personnel at many locations.

Traffic authorities have appealed to residents to comply with road safety norms to avoid penalties. They said the technology-driven mechanism would ensure transparent enforcement while helping streamline traffic movement across the city.

Officials believe the move will strengthen road discipline and encourage responsible driving behaviour, as every major traffic junction in the city will remain under constant electronic surveillance.
