Chandigarh, December 8, 2025: Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has suspended Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of former cricketer and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, from the party’s primary membership. The suspension order was issued on Monday, though no official reason was mentioned.
The action comes after several days of open criticism by Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu against the Punjab Congress leadership and senior party figures, which had triggered strong resentment within the organisation. Her remarks about the alleged exchange of ₹500 crore in return for the chief minister’s post had already caused major upheaval in the state unit.
Dr Sidhu intensified her attack on Monday when she claimed during a media interview that Punjab Congress president Raja Warring sold a councillor ticket for ₹5 crore. She also alleged that Raja Warring, Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Randhawa and Partap Singh Bajwa were all eyeing the chief minister’s position and were responsible for weakening the party from within.
U-turn on Earlier “₹500 Crore CM Post” Remark
Earlier in the day, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu attempted to retract her controversial comment, saying her statement had been distorted. She clarified, “I am shocked at how my straightforward remarks were twisted. I only said that our Congress Party has never demanded anything from us.”
Her earlier statement—claiming that “only the one who pays ₹500 crore becomes CM”—had drawn severe backlash from party members.
Two days ago, after meeting Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria in Chandigarh, Dr Sidhu had told reporters that her husband would actively participate in politics only if the Congress projected him as the chief ministerial face. She added that Navjot Singh Sidhu’s loyalty to the Congress and Priyanka Gandhi was unquestionable but expressed doubt that state Congress leaders would ever allow him to rise within the party.
