Vancouver (National Times): The Vancouver Police Department has appointed Steve Rai as its new Chief Constable, making history as the first Punjabi Sikh to assume the role in the department’s more than 130-year history.
Rai, a respected figure within the force, brings over three decades of policing experience to the position. Known for his dedication to community safety and progressive leadership, Rai’s career began after serving in the Canadian Armed Reserves during his university years—a background that shaped his disciplined and service-driven approach to policing.

“This appointment reflects the evolving face of our city and our commitment to inclusive leadership,” Rai said following the announcement. “I am honoured to serve Vancouver in this capacity and will work hard to build trust across every neighbourhood we serve.”
Rai’s promotion was met with widespread support from both the police board and community leaders, who praised his integrity, professionalism, and longstanding engagement with diverse communities.
His appointment follows the retirement of former Chief Adam Palmer, who served in the role for nearly a decade. As Chief, Rai will now lead the department through a critical period of modernization and public accountability in law enforcement.
The milestone marks a significant moment not only for the VPD but also for the broader South Asian and Sikh communities in Canada, where calls for representation in leadership have grown louder in recent years.
