Trump Threatens to Strip Harvard’s Tax-Exempt Status Amid Ongoing Crackdown on Elite Universities

Washington, May 3, 2025 – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday announced his intention to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status, escalating his administration’s crackdown on elite academic institutions. The announcement, made via his social media platform, marks a new chapter in Trump’s increasingly combative stance against higher education institutions he accuses of promoting “radical left ideologies.”

“We are going to be taking away Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status. It’s what they deserve!” Trump wrote, without offering a timeline or formal policy details.

Harvard University has not yet responded publicly to the president’s remarks.

Since returning to the White House in January, President Trump has aggressively targeted major U.S. universities, accusing them of harboring antisemitic sentiments and fostering anti-American and Marxist agendas. Measures taken by his administration include freezing federal research funding, revoking student visas, and launching investigations into alleged ideological bias on campuses.

Harvard has been among the most vocal institutions pushing back. It has joined a coalition of more than 200 university presidents to protest the administration’s policies and is currently suing the federal government over suspended research grants and related restrictions.

Legal experts say any move to remove Harvard’s tax-exempt status would face a lengthy legal battle, with constitutional and educational funding implications at stake.
