Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta observed Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Day on September 27, paying tribute to officers who lost their lives while serving and protecting communities across the province.
Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis remembered the sacrifices made by police and peace officers, noting that generations of officers have carried out their duties despite knowing they could face serious risks in the line of service.
Since 1876, 108 police and peace officers have died in the line of duty in Alberta. Their sacrifices continue to be remembered by colleagues, families and communities across the province.
The memorial day also recognizes the families and loved ones of fallen officers, whose lives are permanently affected by the loss. Their support and strength remain an important part of the story behind every officer who serves.
Ellis expressed gratitude to police and peace officers currently working across Alberta, acknowledging the demanding nature of their responsibilities and the commitment required to respond to emergencies and protect public safety.
The occasion serves as both a remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice and a tribute to the officers who continue to serve. It also gives Albertans an opportunity to reflect on the risks faced by those who work to keep communities safe.
The minister extended appreciation to all police and peace officers for their service, while reaffirming the province’s respect for those who have fallen and the families who continue to honour their memories.
