Western Disturbance Triggers Fresh Rain Spell in Punjab; Authorities Issue Weather Advisory

Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): A fresh spell of unstable weather has swept across Punjab and Chandigarh, prompting meteorologists to issue warnings for thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds over the next 48 hours. The change in conditions has brought respite from intense heat, but officials have cautioned residents about potential damage from gusty winds and localized storms.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast wind speeds of up to 50 kmph in several districts, accompanied by intermittent rainfall. Weather experts said the ongoing conditions are being driven by an active western disturbance affecting northwestern India.

Many districts across the state are expected to witness rain-bearing clouds, lightning activity and moderate winds. The advisory covers major regions including Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, Hoshiarpur, Sangrur and Pathankot.

The impact of the changing weather was already visible on Thursday evening when strong winds and showers disrupted normal life in some areas. In Mansa district, a dairy farm suffered heavy losses after a metal-roofed structure collapsed during the storm, resulting in the death of livestock and injuries to several animals. Reports also indicated minor injuries to a worker present at the site.

Patiala witnessed disruption to electricity services after a tree uprooted by strong winds fell onto power infrastructure. Several poles and a transformer were damaged, affecting power supply in the surrounding locality and causing temporary traffic congestion.

Despite a slight increase in temperatures during the last 24 hours, most parts of Punjab continue to record readings below seasonal norms. Bathinda remained the hottest location in the state, while Chandigarh received light rainfall that contributed to cooler conditions.

Meteorological officials clarified that the current showers should not be mistaken for the arrival of the southwest monsoon. They explained that the rainfall is linked solely to the western disturbance and associated atmospheric systems influencing the region.

Weather experts expect scattered rainfall activity to continue over the coming days, particularly in northern and central districts. While temperatures are likely to remain stable in the short term, a gradual increase in heat levels is expected once the present system moves away.

Authorities have advised residents, farmers and commuters to stay updated with weather bulletins, avoid unnecessary travel during severe thunderstorms and take precautions against lightning and falling trees or structures during periods of strong winds.
