Falta (Gurpreet Singh): Law enforcement authorities on Saturday arrested Regina Bibi, the wife of Trinamool Congress leader Jahangir Khan, for her suspected role as the mastermind behind a violent raid on the Falta police station earlier this month. The suspect had been evading law enforcement since the outbreak of violence but was successfully captured in the Julpia region of South 24 Parganas district following actionable intelligence received by investigators.
Police officials state that Regina Bibi acted as the chief strategist behind the mobilization of a large crowd aimed at forcefully liberating her husband from state custody. Khan had been detained near the international border with Nepal in connection with numerous criminal offenses. Intelligence reports suggest that the suspect chaired a planning session twenty-four hours before the riot, directing followers to congregate a short distance from the police station before launching an organized advance. Due to the nature of the confrontation, the accused faces multiple stringent statutory charges, including violations of the Arms Act and the Explosives Act.
The underlying disturbance saw a hostile crowd damage government vehicles and attempt to breach the secure perimeters of the station house. Order was eventually restored after central security detachments intervened to scatter the rioters, resulting in the detention of twenty-five participants to date. Interestingly, Khan had previously adopted a defiant public persona during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election cycle, though he ultimately withdrew from the subsequent Falta re-poll where a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate secured a decisive victory.
This high-profile arrest coincides with a broader institutional crackdown targeting political strongmen and unlawful operations across the state following the political transition in the May assembly polls. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently reiterated that the current administration will enforce a strict zero-tolerance policy against public disruption and ordered uncompromising legal steps against anyone targeting state infrastructure. Regina Bibi will be produced before a magistrate to facilitate deeper interrogations into potential institutional backing behind the engineered unrest.
