Washington (Rajeev Sharma): The United States has officially renamed its largest regional military headquarters, dropping the term “Indo” from US Indo-Pacific Command and restoring its earlier title, US Pacific Command (USPACOM). Authorities have clarified that the change is limited to nomenclature and does not signal any shift in defence strategy or operational jurisdiction.
The announcement by the US Department of War states that the command’s geographical coverage and military objectives will remain exactly as before, despite the return to its historical designation.
Based in Hawaii, the command supervises one of the world’s most strategically important regions, covering an area that stretches from the Pacific coastline of the United States to India’s western boundary. It also serves as a key platform for defence cooperation with several partner nations, including India, through joint military exercises and security engagements.
The term “Indo-Pacific Command” was adopted in 2018 during President Donald Trump’s first administration to reflect the increasing strategic importance of the Indian Ocean and India’s expanding role in regional affairs. At the time, the renaming was viewed as a recognition of changing geopolitical realities and closer defence partnerships across the broader Indo-Pacific region.
With the latest decision, US officials have stressed that only the title has changed, while the command’s mission, alliances and operational commitments remain intact. An official statement reaffirmed the organisation’s dedication to working alongside allies and partners to preserve stability and maintain an open and secure regional environment.
Defence observers interpret the command’s continued emphasis on a “free and open theatre” as a reaffirmation of Washington’s commitment to protecting critical maritime routes and supporting a rules-based international order in the face of evolving strategic challenges.
Explaining the rationale behind the move, officials said reviving the Pacific Command name pays tribute to the organisation’s longstanding legacy and institutional history. Since its establishment, the command has played a central role in major military operations, regional security initiatives and humanitarian assistance missions across the Pacific.
The statement also noted that the Pacific Command identity represents decades of cooperation with allied nations and reflects a heritage that has shaped US military engagement in the region since the post-World War II era.
Security analysts believe the renaming is unlikely to alter existing defence relationships or ongoing collaborations with regional partners. India’s military, which regularly engages with the Hawaii-based command through various bilateral and multilateral initiatives, is expected to continue working within the same framework.
