Rajeev Sharma :- Former US President Donald Trump once again praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a “great friend” and asserting that India can place “100 per cent trust” in the United States, remarks that come amid growing discussions over stronger India-US strategic and trade ties.
Trump made the comments during a virtual address delivered at a special event organised at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi to mark the 250th Independence celebrations of the United States. Speaking through a phone interaction facilitated by US Ambassador Sergio Gor, Trump expressed admiration for India and Prime Minister Modi.
“I love India. Prime Minister Modi is a great man and a great friend. Tell Modi I said hello. I am a very big fan of his,” Trump said during the address, drawing attention from diplomats and attendees present at the event.
Highlighting the evolving relationship between the two democracies, Trump said the United States and India had never been closer than they are today. He further remarked that India could always rely on America whenever support was needed.
The remarks are being widely viewed in the context of ongoing efforts by both nations to deepen economic and strategic cooperation. Recent statements from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also indicated that Washington and New Delhi could move towards a fresh trade agreement in the near future.
Observers believe Trump’s comments send a message of reassurance regarding future collaboration in areas such as investment, technology and defence cooperation.
Despite recent tariff-related disagreements between the two countries, India and the United States continue to strengthen engagement in sectors including defence, artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and energy security.
Earlier this year, the US administration reduced tariffs on certain Indian products from 50 per cent to 18 per cent, a move seen as a positive signal for bilateral trade relations.
