Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab and Chandigarh are likely to see a prolonged dry spell from today as the southwest monsoon begins withdrawing from the region, bringing a gradual change in the weather pattern.
The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh said atmospheric conditions have become favourable for the monsoon to pull back from parts of Punjab, along with Rajasthan, Saurashtra and Kutch, over the next three to four days.
The transition is expected to bring clearer skies and a noticeable difference between daytime and early-morning temperatures.
Faridkot Records 38°C
Punjab did not receive any rainfall during the last 24 hours, while Chandigarh also remained dry. The state’s average maximum temperature increased by 0.8 degree Celsius and was close to the seasonal normal.
Faridkot recorded the highest maximum temperature in Punjab at 38°C.
With rain activity weakening, weather conditions are expected to become more stable in the coming days, although isolated light showers cannot be completely ruled out during the week.
Westerly Winds to Bring Cooler Start to the Day
The weather department said westerly winds are likely to dominate across Punjab and Chandigarh as cloud cover decreases.
Lower humidity levels, combined with clearer skies, are expected to make mornings and evenings feel cooler. During the night, clear skies allow the ground to lose heat more quickly, resulting in lower temperatures by early morning.
The afternoon, however, is likely to remain warmer as sunshine pushes temperatures upward.
September 24 Outlook
For September 24, the department has indicated limited rainfall activity, with any showers likely to remain light and confined to isolated areas. Overall rainfall during the week is expected to stay below normal.
Daytime temperatures are likely to remain around 32°C to 34°C in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, SAS Nagar and Patiala. Other parts of northern and central Punjab could record maximum temperatures between 34°C and 36°C.
Hoshiarpur and Rupnagar may continue to experience temperatures slightly above normal.
Night temperatures are expected to remain relatively comfortable. Minimums could fall to 16°C-18°C in Pathankot, while Amritsar, Gurdaspur and parts of Hoshiarpur and Rupnagar may see readings of 18°C-20°C.
Central Punjab is likely to record minimum temperatures between 20°C and 22°C, while southern districts may remain in the 22°C-24°C range.
Overall, the coming days are expected to mark a gradual shift towards drier weather, cooler mornings and evenings, and warmer afternoons across Punjab and Chandigarh.
