Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has sought an end to the ongoing strike by state government employees before any formal dialogue is held over their demands, while assuring the workforce that their legitimate concerns will be heard.
In a message posted on X, Mann acknowledged the important role played by government employees and said the administration viewed them as part of its own family. He maintained that the government was open to listening to issues raised by employees and finding solutions wherever their demands were justified.
At the same time, the Chief Minister made the government’s position on the ongoing agitation clear. He said negotiations and a strike could not continue simultaneously, indicating that the protest would have to be withdrawn before talks could commence.
Mann said his government was committed to resolving every genuine issue raised by employees. However, he stressed that dialogue would be possible only in an atmosphere where government functioning was not being affected by the strike.
The statement comes as government employees continue their agitation in Punjab over their various demands. The prolonged standoff has brought renewed attention to issues concerning the state’s workforce and the government’s approach towards resolving employee grievances.
By appealing directly to the employees, Mann sought to strike a balance between acknowledging their concerns and defending the government’s position on negotiations. His message suggested that the administration was not opposed to discussions but wanted the strike to be called off as a first step.
The Chief Minister’s remarks could pave the way for further discussions if the protesting employees agree to suspend their agitation. However, whether the two sides can reach common ground will depend on how the employee organisations respond to the government’s condition.
For the moment, the dispute remains centred on one key question: whether the strike will end first, allowing formal talks between the employees and the Punjab government to begin.
